In the wake of a deadly attack, veteran demonhunter Karian Vanador faces a daunting task sending her friends and family into danger without being at their side. With her pregnancy progressing, she must see to other tasks she must uncover a spy within her own Order, expose servants of the demon kings living right in her home city, and match wits with enemies that she knows little, if anything, about. And in all of this, she must act as a general, putting the lives of her friends and family at risk to see to an end she can't accomplish herself.

Erijinkor Tesconis also faces a daunting task he must lead the Silver Blades and their allies without Kari's expertise and sword arm. Though a capable leader, he and his companions face an unknown danger, something only seen once before in the world. Adding to the pressures of his task are challenges he is ill-prepared for allying with werewolves, taking up authority over nobility, and working to patch relationships among his own family.

Both will face tests that push them to their limits, weighing the balance of love for their families against duty and a deep-seated desire to protect an entire world. But can either of them stand against the legacy of the Devil Queen herself?

I received an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

Joe Jackson is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. Every book in the series gets better and better. After finishing this book, if book five were available, I would have bought it immediately. The only downside to this book, is that if you are reading it while he is writing the series, you have to wait for the next book!

Okay, to this book. This book changes direction slightly from previous books in the series, but I loved the change. Joe took this novel on a more internal journey. The main focus was on the internal change of Kari and the internal struggles within her. She is pregnant during this book and is unable to be on the battle field fighting demons. She has to stay home while others fight for her. The internal struggle is just as rich and interesting as the fighting on the battlefield and I was equally intrigued by both aspects of the story.

I'm totally biased.... I love the character Kari. She is so real to me even though she is technically a fictitious species on a fictitious planet, this makes her no less real to me. She is easily my current favorite female character. She gets more complex and real with every book. I can't wait to read each new book, for the most part, to read about Kari and what is happening to her. Kari is so well written, so complex, and so true, it is amazing. I have to keep reminding myself that a man wrote this stunningly accurate female character. She is full of paradoxes and twists. She is as adept on the battle field as she is with internal struggles. Oh, wait, that's actually Joe. Oh well, Kari deserves some of the credit too.

Back to the story, that's what you want to know about, right? A character from the past comes into play and we have a fresh point of view. This character is involved in most of the fighting that happens off campus and provides a fresh take on the usual cast of characters, from Kari to her in-laws. I can't tell you who, because if I did, it would be a spoiler, and that wouldn't be right. I will assure you that it is awesome, done with exquisite skill, and will blow your socks off!

The story is engaging, entertaining, and keeps you reading with every turn of the book. You simply can't put this book down! The understanding of 'demons' and the underworld or Mehr'Durillia grows more with each book, but also more complex. The relationships with all the creatures on Citaria and Mehr'Durillia become more intertwined and labyrinthine. Every book is more interesting and exciting. Don't let the complexity of the relationships scare you away, because Joe does a nice job of updating you on who each character is and giving a little background when a character hasn't been around for a few chapters.

Now to the writing. His first book reminded me of Ursula K. Le Guin's writing, however, every book after that seems to have lost the Le Guin feel that I fell in love with in the first book. What has replaced the Le Guin feel, is intensity, intrigue, and connection. One thing I feel he has done better than Le Guin, is the connection of reader to the characters. Jackson has made Kari real and available to the reader. The characters in Wizard of Earthsea felt farther away and less real, especially when compared to Karian Vanador.

In summary, this book still has some awesome fight scenes, mainly with an awesome character from the past (before book 1 began), while focusing more on the internal struggle inside Kari. It is equal in both internal and external conflict, and both are done equally well. This book is even more exciting to read than previous books, keeps you on your toes and the pages turning, and is overall well written. While he's lost the Le Guin effect noted in book one, he's gained a fast moving style with deep connection to characters.

Legacy of the Devil Queen An Epic Fantasy Adventure Eve of Redemption Book 4 edition by Joe Jackson Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

Legacy of the Devil Queen (Eve of Redemption, #4) by Joe Jackson is the fourth book but it has not slowed down in action, epic wow-ness, or ways to please the reader. These books are epic in world building, character building, and action. The inter-play between characters are unique and believable. (Even if the characters are 1/2 demon or dragon) Love his imagination and world he has created. Can't wait if he has book 5!
Kari has a million things to do, but she's going to have to learn to delegate. Pregnancy keeps her bound to a more local, administrative job for now, which is irritating because something is razing small villages and leaving no survivors. So the Silver Blades must go to figure out what kind of creature is responsible, while Kari handles trying to root out whoever is leaking the Order's plans and secrets to outsiders. Because if she can't find the traitor, the demon kings have an even greater advantage. . .

This is mostly split between two storylines, and both are strong. The Silver Blades have what seems to be a straightforward mission, except the demon---is it a demon?--they're hunting is like nothing they've ever seen before. And it's capable of killing highly trained warriors before they can even strike a blow in return, which presents some complications to the usual strategies.

In addition, Erik's father is finally back in the picture. No one's ever said before why his parents split apart, but now we have some of the reason, and the fumbling attempts at reconciliation.

I also loved the followup on various things from previous books, whether it was the situation with the brys or how Ty can find new purpose after his devastating injuries. Kari's actions resonate in ways no one could have expected.

And I'm thrilled that werewolves play into the ongoing plot. They're an intriguing addition and I hope to see a lot more of them as this tentative alliance deepens.

The humor is also on point. Some favorite bits

“Should be just like old times,” Aeligos said. “Hi, you two! We’re headed into a possible war; would you like to join us? It’ll build character!”

Or watching Erik's reaction to a certain mayor was also comedy gold (and Kari's letter about it is just as funny).

Or the werewolves
“Thank God for that,” Gil said. “I’m terrible with keeping track of titles, proper forms of address, and all that. Out in the wilds, we have three titles friend, foe, and prey. And the last is only for food animals.”

Overall this is another strong installment in an excellent series. I rate this book Highly Recommended.
